I have to be honest with you...I love apple crisp a little bit more than I love apple pie. And if your family loves apple crisp as much as I do, then you're going to love this recipe for Apple Crumb Pie.

Dutch Apple Crumb Pie Recipe

This recipe is the same as a Dutch Apple Pie recipe, although I like calling it a crumb pie recipe. Serve warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream or even homemade whipped cream to make it even more delicious.

How to make crumb topping for apple pie

A crumb streusel topping is a classic way to top an apple crumb pie. To make the topping, you will need flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon.

  • First, mix together the flour and sugar in a bowl.
  • Then, cut in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Add the cinnamon and mix again until well blended.
  • Finally, sprinkle the topping over the pie filling and bake as directed.

For this recipe, you will also need single pie crust. You can use my favorite pie crust recipe or you can use a store purchased one.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Step 1: Roll out the pie crust and place in a pie plate, flute the edges and set aside.
  • Step 2: Prepare the filling by placing the sliced apples in a bowl. Add the sugar, flour and cinnamon and mix to combine with the apples.
  • Step 3: Pour the apples into the pie crust. Ilike to use aluminum pie plates to make clean up easy...especially when you're having company.

Storage Tips

Here are a few easy storage tips for baked apple crumb pie:

  • Let it cool completely before covering it with foil or plastic wrap.
  • If you wrap it while it’s still warm, moisture will build up and make the crust soggy.
  • Store the pie in the fridge for up to four days.

Freezing Tips

Freezing apple pie is a great way to enjoy the taste of homemade pie without all the work. And it's really easy to do!

  • Simply bake your pie as usual, then allow it to cool completely.
  • Wrap the pie tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in the freezer.
  • You can also freeze apple pie for up to six months.
  • When you're ready to enjoy your frozen pie, remove it from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight or out on the counter for about an hour.
  • Then, pop it in the oven to reheat and enjoy!

That looks awesome, however, my pie crusts always turn out bad. Any way it could taste semi delicious with a store bought one? I'm a good cook, but horrible baker, so any hints would help! 🙂

I like that last photo. I've always crimped the edges of my crust with my thumb, but now I go back afterwards and make that little point on each little scallop, like you do in the photo. It makes it even prettier!!
